On Thursday 3 March 2022, members and guests of Sevenoaks Conservatives Association kicked off a new year of social events by inviting the Rt Hon Jacob Rees-Mogg, to speak at a gala dinner.
The event marked an eagerly anticipated return to socialising and fund-raising after a two-year hiatus forced by the Covid-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions.
Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was recently promoted from Leader of the House to Minister for Brexit Opportunities, spent time mingling and chatting to members and their guests before enjoying a delicious two-course meal of beef bourguignon and apple pie.
Sevenoaks MP Laura Trott introduced Mr Rees-Mogg who went on to deliver a compelling after-dinner speech. In it he spoke movingly about the situation in Ukraine, the UK’s determination to help refugees fleeing the crisis and the government’s efforts to choke off the supply of money to Putin’s Russia.
Jacob Rees-Mogg also energised the crowd by outlining his vision for Britain which he said would “thrive” post-Brexit and post-Covid. At the dinner were a number of young Conservatives, most of whom got a chance to talk personally with Mr Rees-Mogg who described them as “the future of the Party”.
There were a number of questions from the floor, which Mr Rees-Mogg answered directly, covering Ukraine, Russia, oligarchs, Brexit, trade and future business opportunities.
Linden Kemkaran, Chair of Sevenoaks Conservatives, described the evening as “a great success.” She went on to say: “it was fantastic to be able to get together again in person, there was such energy in the room and to have someone like Jacob as our guest speaker made the evening feel extra-special.”
Laura Trott MP said: “My thanks to Jacob and the Sevenoaks Conservatives for a fantastic evening.”
