SPEAKER Prof Emeritus Philip Stott – Talk is titled ‘A masterpiece is born’ and will cover the time in the late 19th century that Ightham Mote was rented to General & Queen Palmer from Colorado Springs in the USA (recently mentioned on Michael Portillo’s Great American Railways journeys on the BBC). During this time Ightham Mote became a hub for the aesthetic movement – and the Palmers hosted guests such as the author Henry James and the greatest portrait painter of his generation, John Singer Sargent (most recently celebrated in an exhibition of his work at the National Portrait Gallery in 2015). During Singer Sargent’s stays at Ightham Mote, he painted a portrait of the Palmer’s oldest daughter, Elsie (to which the talk title refers) as well as producing a large painting titled ‘A Game of Bowls’ (a painting of various guests playing bowls on the north lawn of the garden), both on display at the Mote this year.
